WHAT ARE COMPLIANCE CHECKS?

Compliance checks use underage decoys to attempt to illegally purchase alcohol or tobacco from retail merchants. As the local licensing agency, cities and counties are responsible for ensuring that retailers comply with state and local control laws. In Minnesota, you must be 21 years of age to purchase both alcohol and tobacco or vaping related products.

Wright County has over 200 establishments licensed to sell either alcohol, tobacco or vaping related products and each are required to be checked annually to ensure proper ID techniques are used, underage individuals are not allowed to enter 21+ establishments, and that sales are not occurring illegally to people under the age of 21.

This is done in partnership between the Wright County Sheriff’s Office and Wright County Public Health throughout the calendar year. MEADA created the Compliance Check Champion campaign to highlight and share publicly those that refuse to sell to youth of Wright County.
